Pinto Paint Schemes

You may have noticed that there are different paint schemes for the Pinto / Stormcloud horses. I'd like to take a little deeper dive into that subject.

Horses were painted at the factory after the sides were glued together using a home built Masking Tool - basically a clamp that held the complete horse. Areas on the tool exposed or covered various parts of the horse. Two masking tools were used for the Pinto horses. The first one covered most of the horse including the mane, tail, eyes, nostrils and hooves and exposed the soon to be white (on Brown Pintos) or Black (on White Pintos) areas . After this the horses went on down the line for the Mane, Tail, Hoof, Nostril and Eye paint that used the more common masking tool that every horse had.

Knee Paint Scheme
This is the most common paint scheme for the Brown (Bay) Pinto.
It can be easily distinguished from the other paint schemes by looking at the right front knee of the horse. If it is painted white then you have the Knee Paint Scheme.

The left side of the paint scheme is nearly identical to the NO Knee Paint scheme.

The Front of the paint scheme is slighty different than the NO Knee Paint scheme.
You'll notice that the white paint on the nose is not inside the left nostril.

NO Knee Paint Scheme
This second paint scheme is less common for the Brown (Bay) Pinto.
It can be easily distinguished from the other paint schemes by looking at the right front knee of the horse. If it is unpainted then you have the NO Knee Paint Scheme.

Knee Paint Scheme - Stormcloud
The Stormcloud Pinto is a different paint scheme than the Brown (Bay) Pinto.
Remember, that Stormcloud was molded in white styrene and painted black.
So, I call this a Knee Paint scheme because the right knee is painted black. There may be a No Knee Paint version but I haven't found one yet...

The Front of the paint scheme is also very different than the Brown Pinto Knee Paint scheme.
Most of the face is left unpainted, with only the right side paint covering the right eye area.
