Johnny West PL Books
On this page you can scroll down to view all the PL Pages I've transcribed. I've tried to make the display match how the acutal pages look in the books. The PL Books are little (5x7 inch) 3-ring binders stuffed with yellowing pages, many have pictures stapled to the page. The books are fragile and if you ever get a chance to see one in person, be very careful ;-).
The information in the left column with the light background is what is actually typed on the PL Page including misspellings and grammatical errors. The information in the right column with the black background are any hand written notes on the page or pictures and my own comments on the page or my attempts to bring together other facts to draw a conclusion. Although the PL Numbers are not always in chronological order (sometimes Marx used the same PL number for later reuses of the same mold) it generally flows from the lower PL number to the higher over time. This little 'Jump Menu' will allow you to go to a particular PL Book display Jump menu:PL Book Main Menu

Handwritten Comments: | PL 1242-A Daniel Boone Head 1242-1 (for Daniel Boone) PL 1242B Black Scouts 4 Heads 1/16/75 |
Analytical Comments: | Since this has an Erie, PA mold number it is my belief that Stony was first produced in Erie, PA and then the molds were either duplicated for the Glen Dale plant or more likely, shipped, to Glen Dale for normal production. Looking at the sequence of PL numbers written on the page, it would indicate that Stony was made first, and then the PL 1242-A or -1 was created for Daniel Boone and then PL 1242B was created for Jed Gibson. So, we can assume that Stony was actually the first 12 inch figure produced by Marx. |

Analytical Comments: | Since this has an Erie, PA mold number it is my belief that Stony was first produced in Erie, PA and then the molds were either duplicated for the Glen Dale plant or more likely, shipped, to Glen Dale for normal production. The fact that this mold contains "2 extra parachute releases" may explain why there seems to be more of these pieces than actual parachutes since each stony figure got this accessory set but only the paratrooper versions got the parachutes. |

Analytical Comments: | Since this has an Erie, PA mold number it is my belief that Stony was first produced in Erie, PA and then the molds were either duplicated for the Glen Dale plant or more likely, shipped, to Glen Dale for normal production. Since this mold also has the parachute releases like PL-1243 it means that this little accessory was produced in doubles unless Marx blocked them off during production. So did the paratrooper versions of Stony actually have two parachute harness buckles?? |

Handwritten Comments: | N/A |
Analytical Comments: | This PL Page would indicate that the articulated Stony (originally called Stoney) was made in Glen Dale and was put into production after March 1965 by the dates on the pictures. So the order of figure production may be Non-articulated Stony Daniel Boone Articulated Stony (which could be the first figure to use the new elbow and knee joints) |

Handwritten Comments: | 1266-3 New mold Oct 1973 was for Canada but not sent Prod no 2062 in lower left |
Analytical Comments: | There's a lot of information on this page. 1. Johnny was made after March of 1965 so the order of figures would be: Nonarticulated Stony, Daniel Boone, Articulated Stony and then Johnny West (both articulated Stony and Johnny have dates in March but since the picture is dated May, I believe Johnny came after the articulated stony). 2. The arms and legs were changed in 1970 indicating when the mold was changed to allow for the clevis pins in shoulders and rivets in hips. 3. Some new mold was made for Canada in 1973 but never shipped. Was this a new design or just a duplicate mold?? 4. Since this has an Erie, PA mold number it is my belief that this set was first produced in Erie, PA and then the molds were either duplicated for the Glen Dale plant or more likely, shipped, to Glen Dale for normal production. 5. The PL numbers indicated on this page 1266, 1266-1, 1266-2, 1266-3 indicate that there were actually 4 Johnny West body molds made over time. |

Handwritten Comments: | Mold Changed 10-2-70 for using clevis pins. WN |
Analytical Comments: | So the Clevis pin change actually occured after October 1970. Probably just in time for the Christmas 1970 production cycle. |

Analytical Comments: | Actually the 3rd Johnny West body mold made. First two would have been 1266 and 1266-1. No PL-1266 page has been seen but the 1266-1 page indicates a Erie, PA mold number. So this may be the mold used exclusively by Glen Dale. |

Analytical Comments: | First PL mention of the new Jesse James figure. Unknown date but clearly shows that the torso and lower legs were the changes made. So Jesse would have used the same upper legs and arms as Johnny West. At the end of April 1973 Sheriff Garrett was to use the same mold. Still trying to determine what is meant by 'Core Pins'. Could these be seperate mold parts that were inserted to create the hollow cavities for the neck post, arm and hip springs??? |

Handwritten Comments: | 4 Star badges added for 2085 Sheriff 6-18-73 Wn Then in mold contains section: 4 Stars-Badges for 2085 Sheriff 6-18-73 added to mold Wn. |
Analytical Comments: | Stars added to Johnny West sets in June 1973, Best of the West half way through production. So the mold for Sheriff Garrett body was created in April and the Johnny West hard accessory set was modified in June by adding the stars, indicating that Sheriff Garrett went into production in June or July of 1973. This also indicates when the Best of the West Johnny version had the stars added to the set - June of 1973. |

Analytical Comments: | Date Recieved block says 5-22-65 Samples Typo in mold contains should say 1 Left Arm Upper instead of Lower. Buddy Charlie is born 22 May 1965! Originally for Erie, PA production. This figure was originally issued in a cellophane bag with a backing card calling him Stony Smith. Possibly because of a disconnect between producing the figure and the Buddy Charlie or All American Fighter boxes. Three molds were necessary for Buddy, see PL-1270 and PL-1271 for the other body parts |

Analytical Comments: | This indicates that Johnny West was made prior to May 1965. No sense having a horse without a cowboy. Also shows that Thunderbolt was made in Erie first. I think I have a box for Flame that has a Girard label on it too. Were the first two horses (Thunderbolt and Flame) made in Erie or Girard? |

Analytical Comments: | PL number on photos different then official number. Shows that Thunderbolt was originally made in Erie, PA. Shows that the wheels for the wagon horse and the knight horses were added in Feb 28th, 1968. Does that mean that no solid hoof Thunderbolts were made after the mold was changed? |

Handwritten Comments: | 1864 Fighting Eagle Bare Arms Molds changed for clevis pins 3-26-73 Wn 1864 Ft. Eagle (New Body Bare chest) Prod num 2063 and 1863 Geronimo |
Analytical Comments: | PL 1274 is for Chief Cherokee originally made in Erie, PA (see Erie part number reference). PL 1274-A is for Fighting Eagle. Fighting Eagle got clevis pins on March 26th, 1973. Interesting possibility indicated by the hand written note: It seems that Fighting Eagle may have been conceived with the Cherokee torso but then it was decided to give him a 'New' body with bare chest. The other possibility of this note is that the writer is just highlighting that this is a new type of indian body - being bare chested... Hmmm... |

Photo 1 Notes: | dated 4-7-67 Hand written: Old Style See Change 1970 Shows old style cherokee body parts on sprue, no rivets, wide breech cloth. On back New 2063 Indian Body 4-7/67 |
Photo 2 Notes: | PL1274 dated 4-19-65 Shows original cherokee on sprue |
Photo 3 Notes: | Picture shows new Cherokee and Fighting Eagle body parts on sprues with clevis and rivet holes in hips and shoulders. Written in margins: new 1970, dated 10/5/70 On back: pl-1274-2 10/2/70 Revised Indian mold bare chest and reg. for use with clevis pins |
Handwritten Comments: | Note Arms with tassels. Molds changed to clevis pins 3-26-73 |
Analytical Comments: | Comments on this page indicate that Chief Cherokee got clevis pins on October 2nd, 1970 but Fighting Eagle did not get them until March 26, 1973. This should mean that all 'flesh / red' colored arms do not have clevis pins and that some 'carmal / darker' arms don not have clevis pins.... I have to verify this and try to figure out why it took Marx so long to change this mold. |

Analytical Comments: | This PL Page states the changes made to the Chief Cherokee PL (PL-1274) in order to produce Fighting Eagle. The use of NEW threw me for a while but I believe it just means that this is a new set of parts for Fighting Eagle as compared to Chief Cherokee. I had originally thought that it might mean that F.E. was issued with the cherokee torso and then changed. Maybe that is why the first UK Fighting Eagle's used the Cherokee bodies - easier than getting the new molds from the US for the Bare Chested version. |

Analytical Comments: | Since this has an Erie, PA mold number it is my belief that Chief Cherokee was first produced in Erie, PA and then the molds were either duplicated for the Glen Dale plant or more likely, shipped, to Glen Dale for normal production. I believe the figure production went: Stony - Non-articulated leg Daniel Boone Stony - Articulated leg Johnny West Chief Cherokee Buddy Charlie Then production was moved to Glen Dale, WV |

Analytical Comments: | In order to issue Chief Cherokee, 4 molds were needed: 1. Body mold - PL-1274 (5 April, 1965) 2. Soft Acc Mold - PL-1275 (after 29 March, 1965) 3. Hard Acc Mold - this PL-1276 (23 April, 1965) 4. Head/Hand mold - PL-1277 (after 12 March, 1965) so Chief Cherokee could not have been produced until 23 April 1965. Likely a few weeks after, so Chief Cherokee is likely to have been first issued in May of 1965. |

Analytical Comments: | Headband not molded on geronimo head. I have seen a molded Geronimo head with the headband as part of the sculpt. This was obviously changed to having a seperate accessory headband. Maybe because none of the other head accessories (feathered headdress, buffalo horn headdress, feathered headband and ceremonial mask) would fit the sculpt with the headband. |

Analytical Comments: | Interesting about the note on the different PL numbers for different colors… The molds shouldn't be categorized by the color of plastic used. Handwritten Comments: | N/A |
Analytical Comments: | This one has me confused. The order dates show 1966 but QD Sam was not conceived until after 1972. This may be the original James West mold but with new inserts for the original cavities. PL1348 or PL 1348A (if exist) may shed more light on this puzzle. This also indicates that the leg molds were changed for regular Sam when QD Sam was issued. Because of the torso change the legs had to be modified but they used them for the regular Sam too. |

Handwritten Comments: | #2097 Order not placed yet by date ordered |
Analytical Comments: | * There is also a hand written question (?) mark next to the entry '2 knives' in the mold contains section. This may indicate that there's been a type-O on the PL page (there never were any knives in the set) or that the figure was supposed to have some sort of knife that never made it into production. I believe the former - just a typing mistake. |
